Johnson and Volmer Creek Bridges

Clatsop County, Oregon

Start Date: July 2011
End Date: August 2011

The replacement of the Volmer Creek and Johnson Creek Bridges demonstrated innovative use of sustainable practices on an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) project. In a race against time, Hamilton crews worked long hours to tear out half a bridge and replace it every week during a four week period. By so doing, the bridges were open on weekends during the busy tourist season.

Hamilton worked closely with the Oregon Department of Transportation to successfully re-purpose sixteen, 30' pre-stressed concrete beams salvaged from other bridge projects. Use of the re-purposed beams on the saved close to $100,000 on the job as well as diverting more than 160,000 tons of material from the waste stream. At least one lane of traffic remained open throughout the entire construction project in order to minimize impact to the traveling public.
